Discharge Upgrade Clinic

Members of the military leave service with one of five discharge statuses that will determine their access to VA health care and benefits.  Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury wreak psychological havoc on some of our servicemembers and the resulting behavioral health problems can easily lead to bad discharge papers that bar them from VA services. In other words, veterans need treatment for the condition that got them cut off from treatment.

In New York City, there are no legal services organizations that focus on discharges. In 2013 we launched our pro bono Discharge Upgrade Clinic in partnership with the New York County Lawyers' Association and the Feerick Center for Social Justice at Fordham Law School. The clinic matches volunteer attorneys with low-income veterans applying for discharge upgrades.
